Genealogical Association of Nova Scotia to re-open Tuesday with COVID-19 protocols in place

The Genealogical Association of Nova Scotia (GANS) will become the first Canadian genealogical society to resume some activities when it opens its office and the Terry Punch Research Library, by appointment only, on Tuesday, June 23.

In an email message to members, the board of directors said, “We have devised protocols and reconfigured our public space to permit a safe reopening.”

All members, visitors, and volunteers entering
the Genealogical Association of Nova Scotia’s facilities will be required to wear a mask.

The following procedures will be in place, and a link to these procedures has been posted on the GAN’s home page.

  • Visitors are limited to four at one time.
  • Visitors should not enter the office if they feel sick, and/or show any symptoms of COVID-19, including cough, fever or difficulty breathing.
  • Visitors must bring and wear a face covering. If you do come without one, we have a limited number of disposable face masks available for purchase.
  • During the appointment, visitors must use provided hand sanitizer upon entering, observe social distancing, and follow directional signs and floor markings.
  • Visitors are not permitted to bring food or beverages into the office at this time.
  • Visitors are encouraged to make use of the library catalogue prior to their visit as we will not permit browsing of the collection at this time.
  • Workstations and seating will be sanitized after each appointment.
  • High touch areas will be sanitized on an ongoing basis.

Referring to its May 2020 annual general meeting that had been postponed, the board said, “We will reschedule it when the Public Health Office lifts restrictions on the number of people that can gather. We hope and anticipate that an easing of such restrictions will permit our AGM to be held in the fall.”

The Manitoba Genealogical Society announced a week ago it plans to re-open July 7.

No other provincial genealogical organization has announced re-opening plans at this time.
