Quebec death registers, 1926-1997, on Ancestry

Ancestry has added the collection, Quebec, Canada, Death Registers 1926-1997, to its website.

The collection is an index of information derived from a government death register produced in Quebec between 1926 and 1997. Images of the original documents used to create the index are not included in this collection.

This collection was first made available on Genealogy Quebec where it can still be searched.

If you find a relative’s name, you’ll see their date of birth and date and place of death, but not much else. Still, this information can help you locate the burial record in church registers or cemeteries or perhaps find an obituary in an online newspaper collection.

You will often see the parents’ first names. The mother’s name will almost always be her birth name.

Former Premier of Quebec René Lévesque is among those listed in Ancestry’s new collection, Quebec death registers, 1926-1997.

As with many of Quebec’s records, women in this collection are listed by their birth name, not their married name, which often makes it easier to find them. (Because of this, you’ll probably never see a presentation on finding your female ancestors in Quebec. If you do, it will probably last about a minute. We simply start by looking in the records for women by their name at birth.)

The indexed information is available in both English and French.
