Winnipeg officials recently launched Winnipeg in FOCUS, a website developed in partnership by the City of Winnipeg and Red River College students that allows visitors to search and view photos and graphic materials held by the City of Winipeg Archives. The website contains only a fraction of the thousands of images at the archives, but content will be added as resources allow.
Most of the photos are in the public domain, but must be credited to the City of Winnipeg Archives and include a citation indicating the title and location code within the City of Winnipeg Archives. (They provide an example of an appropriate citation.)
A description of the collection on the Winnipeg in FOCUS website states:
Photographs and graphic materials held by the Archives capture moments in the development of the City of Winnipeg, and have much to show us about ourselves, our government, and the history of the natural and built environment from 1874 – these images are a powerful record of change and growth.
Many photographs in the Archives’ collection were taken by civic employees in the course of their work to document projects or program delivery.
