Genealogist in England searches for descendants of Thomas Corbin and Sarah Sweetland who married in Newfoundland

If you are descended from Thomas Corbin and his wife, Sarah H. Sweetland, who married in 1846 and lived in Carbonear, Newfoundland, Peter Corbin in Salisbury, England would like to hear from you.

Thomas and Sarah had six children together, three of whom (Cora Elizabeth, George John and Frederick Ambrose) were baptised in Port de Grave, which is about a half-hour drive today. Thomas was the only son Thomas and Christian Corbin in the town of Poole in Dorset, England.

The town of Carbonear is one of the oldest permanent settlements in Newfoundland and among the oldest European settlements in North America. At the time, Thomas and Sarah lived there, it would have been an important fishing and shipbuilding centre.

Mr. Corbin believes his great-great-great-grandfather and other family members of that generation held fairly prominent positions in Carbonear and Port de Grave.

He also discovered that Thomas and Sarah’s son, George John, married Elizabeth Rebecca Martin, a woman from Harbour Grace, in the late 1860s. One of their children, Henry Tweedy, moved to Halifax.

More about Mr. Corbin’s Newfoundland/Canadian ancestors and his email address are in The Northern Pen article, Englishman hopes to fill Newfoundland portion of family tree.
