Congratulations to John D. Reid whose blog Canada’s Anglo-Celtic Connections is ranked the third most popular Canadian genealogy website on GenealogyInTime’s list of Top 100 Genealogy Websites for 2014. John’s blog made a very impressive leap from #95 in 2013 to #63 in 2014.
GenealogyInTime writes: “The third rising genealogy star to look out for is John Reid’s popular blog Canada’s Anglo-Celtic Connections.” John’s blog ranks #6 on the list of “rising genealogy stars,” — the websites that made the largest movement up the list.
Dick Eastman’s blog Eastman’s Online Genealogy Newsletter also “exhibited strong growth and has now become the fourth most popular free genealogy website.”
The two most popular Canadian websites are, respectively, Ancestry.ca (#15) and GenealogyInTime Magazine (#16).
The only other Canadian websites that appear on the top 100 list are the Ontario Genealogical Society (#95) and Automated Genealogy (#96).
Websites that contain ancestral records remain the most popular. The top three websites overall are American: Ancestry.com, Find A Grave, and FamilySearch.
The Top 100 List is based on websites specifically devoted to genealogy and genealogy audiences. Not included in the list are websites, such as Australia’s Trove and the US Library of Congress’ Chronicling America, that serve multiple audiences (historians, archivists) and not just genealogists.
GenealogyInTime describes the methodology used to produce the list:
There are three main services that provide internet traffic rankings: Alexa, Compete and Quantcast. Compete and Quantcast measure US internet traffic, which is not particularly useful for a global top 100 list. Alexa, on the other hand, measures the global internet traffic of about 35 million websites worldwide. They are considered to be the leading provider of internet traffic statistics, which is why we use them. …
This year, we have enhanced our top 100 list with new analytics and metrics. In particular, we have spent a good deal of time and effort converting internet traffic rankings into actual number of visitors to each website. This allows us to provide a deeper and richer understanding of the genealogy marketplace….
