Today, August 4, marks 100 years since Britain and Canada entered the First World War.
The Canadian Armed Forces will hold a ceremony today at the National War Memorial in Ottawa at 11:00 a.m. to mark the 100th anniversary of the beginning of Canada’s involvement in WWI and the start of the commemorative period honouring the centennial of the First World War and the 75th anniversary of the Second World War. TNA interactive online map
To mark the centenary of WWI, The National Archives in England has launched a new interactive online map. “Using official records drawn from our collection, this map charts the global reach of the war. Over the course of the centenary period we will update the map with even more details of key events, historical figures and lesser known stories from the conflict.”
When I clicked on Canada, I was pleased to see quite a bit of information about our country’s involvement in the war. Initially, I expected to only see the short paragraph that popped up, but I clicked on Read more about Canada to discover a six-part section: Overview, Western Front, Home Front, Other forces, Key documents, and Key figures.
To all our Canadian veterans, now all gone, a heartfelt thank you. They are all an important part of someone’s family tree.
