Before you leave for your research trip in Ontario, take a look at the Heritage Directory put together by the Ontario Historical Society. It is an incredible list of organizations you may not consider, but these organizations may hold a wealth of information to help you with your family history research.
In addition to a very lengthy list of historical societies in the directory, you will find a wide range of organizations from military re-enactors to an association of archaeologists. You can also search the directory by word, category, or region and county. To test it out, I entered “Guelph” in the search box and discovered more than 20 organizations.
The Heritage Directory — a veritable 411 for history in the province — is organized in the following categories:
First Nations
Historic Sites
Historical Societies
Local Heritage Groups
Municipal Heritage Committees
Museums and Archives
Provincial Organizations
War of 1812
Other Connections
The Heritage Directory is available on the Ontario Historical Society’s website.
This would be a terrific project for historical societies in other provinces. Or have they already produced their own list?
