1931 Canada Census now available on FamilySearch

The 1931 Canada Census was added to FamilySearch sometime before Christmas, giving many of us plenty of opportunity to research during the holidays.

All that you need to search the collection is a free FamilySearch account.

Searching this census on FamilySearch seems faster and easier than on Library and Archives Canada’s website, but that could be my imagination.

The name you’re searching is highlighted in yellow on FamilySearch’s 1931 Census page, making it quick to find.

To help narrow down the results, you can add the name of a spouse, parent or child, which you can also do on Ancestry and MyHeritage, but not on Library and Archives Canada’s site. LAC, however, does allow you to include occupation, religion and other details to the search criteria.

FamilySearch has provided background information on the census. For example, did you know that 40 questions were asked in the 7th Census of Canada, although the Northwest Territories had only 17 questions?

Ancestry and FamilySearch partnered with Library and Archives Canada to digitize and transcribe the 1931 census.
