BIFHSGO launches monthly British Isles ‘Back to Basics’ series with Ken McKinlay

The British Isles Family History Society of Greater Ottawa kicks off the season with a new Back to Basics series of talks, delivered by Ken McKinlay at the beginning of their monthly meetings.

In this British Isles Back to Basics series of talks, Ken will focus on providing the basic understanding needed when doing genealogy and family history research of people in England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland. These sessions are not designed to be deep dives into the subjects but to provide a basic understanding of what records are available, where to find the records, and an overview of issues that may be encountered in the research.

Whether you are new to family history or an “old hand,” Ken’s tips and reminders will be of interest and useful for all.

Back to Basics: England and Wales
The first presentation, Back to Basics: England and Wales, takes place this Saturday, September 9, at 9:00 a.m.

Ken will talk about the various key collections and sites that can help us when researching our kin in England and Wales.

Using Census Analysis to Explore Family Dispersion
If that’s not enough learning for you, there will be a second presentation at 10:00 a.m. Called Locations and Occupations: Using Census Analysis to Explore Family Dispersion, it will be presented by Paul Cripwell.

Over the past four years, Paul’s research into the Cripwell surname has been along two fronts. The first was to document the surname and his ancestry as far back as possible. As this research progressed it became apparent that secondary research towards a one-name study was also necessary. This presentation is part of this study and covers the dispersion of the Cripwell families around England.

This is a free hybrid meeting. You can register to watch online via Zoom or you can attend in person at Knox Presbyterian Church (Lisgar & Elgin) in Geneva Hall.
