Get ready! The 1931 Canada Census is coming!
According to Library and Archives Canada (LAC), we will receive this summer free access to the 1931 Canada Census. First, it will be browsable and then, after some work such as transcribing, it will be searchable.
By law, the personal information in this census can’t be made public until 92 years after the census was completed.
The good news is that on June 1, 2023, the census turns 92, and users will be able to browse the digitized census returns by district and sub-district on the LAC website.
So far, LAC has received the 1931 Census from Statistics Canada in the form of 187 microfilm reels and digitized the reels. In all, there are more than a quarter of a million images.
The last item on LAC’s to-do list is to make the 1931 Census searchable and available for free on its Census Search database. While the delivery date for this task isn’t indicated, LAC leads me to believe in its timeline that it will happen sometime this year.
