Two opportunities to learn about Ukrainian Jewish genealogy and history — and support humanitarian efforts

Genealogists and historians are banding together to hold online events intended to raise money for the people of Ukraine, while helping people learn about their roots in the war-torn country and its history.

History for Ukraine
History for Ukraine is an event taking place March 26 and 27 to benefit the DEC/Red Cross Ukrainian Humanitarian Fund. It will start midday UK time and be live streamed for 24 hours across social media.

It is expected that a number of historians and genealogists will speak at this event. The program is still being developed. Learn more about the event on Heather Wilkinson Rojo’s blog, Nutfield Genealogy.

Jewish Roots in Ukraine
A week later, Lara Diamond, Tammy Hepps, Brooke Schreier Ganz, and Jennifer Mendelsohn will hold an online four-part workshop, called Jewish Roots in Ukraine: Context and Connection, with all proceeds going to Razom for Ukraine and the American Joint Distribution Committee, who are assisting Ukrainian refugees. The workshop takes place April 3, from noon to 4:30 p.m. Eastern time.

The lecture topics are:

  • Your Family’s Context: The History and Legacy of Jews in Ukraine
  • How to Trace Your Family Back to Ukraine
  • How to Access and Use Jewish Ukrainian Records
  • How to Connect Meaningfully to Your Heritage Today

The fees in US dollars for the workshop are:

  • $36.00  –  Mensch
  • $54.00  –  Super Mensch
  • $72.00  –  Extra Super Mensch
