The Canadian Research Knowledge Network (CRKN) announced Wednesday that seven historical newspapers — totaling 2,393 issues — from Saint John, New Brunswick have been digitized and added to the Canadiana website.
The newspapers are:
Saint John Observer, 1853-1855, 52 issues
The Star, and and New Brunswick Literary, Political and Commercial Intelligence4, 1818,1 issue
The Star, 1820, 1822, 1823, 1826, 1828 , 25 issues
The Weekly Observer, 1828-1853, 723 issues
Saint John Observer, and General Advertiser, 1857, 1 issue
Saint John Evening Times, 1904-1905, 111 issues
The Evening Times, 1905-1910, 1,480 issues.
Searchable
The newspapers are searchable by keyword within each series. Keep in mind the search feature will not be perfect because of the quality of some of the issues. Unlike other search engines, this one does not highlight the keyword on the page. The results page, however, indicates the matching pages, so you only need to look at one page of tiny, 19th-century newspaper typeface, instead of the entire issue.
In 2018, CRKN merged with Canadiana.org.
