Newspapers.com is hosting a free-access weekend to Publisher Extra through May 17, 11:59 p.m. Mountain time.
Publisher Extra provides access to all newspapers available on the website.
Even if your ancestor’s local newspaper is not available on the website, give the site a try. I was surprised to discover a story about a Toronto ancestor was picked up by The Star in Windsor, Ontario.
OMG, when I cruised around the site and listened to their little 5 min intro videos that showed what newspapers.com could do and how it worked I was SO excited.
But (you could hear a “but” coming) the only newspaper they have for all of Quebec is the Montreal Gazette and they have nothing for New Brunswick. With those 2 omissions, which to me are crucial, it’s of little use to me.
It’s a fabulous site though – the capability is amazing.
You may want to take a look at the Canadian newspaper collection on MyHeritage. I understand these are the newspapers on Google News Archive, but they are searchable on MyHeritage. Without a subscription, I searched for New Brunswick in the Publication Place field and found results. They are full text searchable.
John D. Reid recently wrote about the Canadian newspapers on MyHeritage and created a short video about online newspaper research in Canada. https://anglo-celtic-connections.blogspot.com/2020/05/new-myheritage-canadian-newspapers.html
Oh Gail, that is so great of you to let me know. Thank you so much. I’ll look into these.
I still have lots of trouble with the BanQ site, so MyHeritage would be better for me.
Thanks again.
