The Royal 22e Régiment Museum at the Citadelle in Quebec City recently opened a permanent exhibit, Je me souviens (I remember), to mark the regiment’s 100th anniversary. Known as the Van Doos, the 22e Régiment was formed in 1914 so that French Canadians could serve in their own language. French-speaking recruits from Canada and the United States joined what was then called the 22nd Battalion and fought in Europe. The regiment remains the only French-language infantry in Canada.
The Royal 22e Régiment Museum was founded by members of the regiment in 1950 to preserve the regiment’s history and that of the Citadelle. It has been an official Canadian Forces museum since 1974.
