Cool Canadian bloggers

Last week, Family Tree Magazine published its list of Social Media Mavericks: 40 to follow, assembled by American genealogy rock star Lisa Louise Cooke. The list, described as the “top genealogy bloggers Tweeters, Facebookers, Pinners, and Youtubers,” generated discussion among many bloggers and Facebookers who either agreed or disagreed with the list — or said they didn’t like lists.

I was disappointed to find not one Canadian among the mavericks. Not surprisingly, the list was primarily American with a handful of Brits thrown in.

Inspired by the list, I put together a list of Cool Canadian Bloggers. These are the Canadians who post often and share information that helps us learn and further our family history research.

The Armchair Genealogist – Freelance writer and family historian Lynn Palermo from Simcoe, Ontario shares information on how to research online and encourages her readers to write their ancestors’ stories.

Canada’s Anglo-Celtic Connections – John D. Reid posts two or three items daily from an Ottawa perspective, primarily about British and Irish family history resources, and often about Canadian news and resources. His blog was named one of the top 25 genealogy blogs in 2013 by Internet Genealogy magazine.

English Research from Canada – Ottawa-based Elizabeth Kipp writes on an almost daily about her English ancestors, her son-in-law’s French Canadian ancestors, and her one-name studies.

Family Tree Knots – Ottawa-based Ken McKinlay writes about brick walls, education, genealogy for beginners, and research techniques.

GenealogyCanada – Ontario-based Elizabeth Lapointe writes daily items about Canadian genealogy, heritage and history. Her blog was named one of the top 25 genealogy blogs in 2013 by Internet Genealogy magazine.

The Olive Tree Genealogy Blog – Georgian Bay-based Lorine Massey posts tips for finding elusive brick-wall ancestors, new genealogy databases and events, and prompts to encourage you to write your family story. Her website by the same name is also well known internationally.

Prairie History Blog – The Regina Public Library posts information about new items in their collection and online genealogy resources. Even if you live thousands of miles away, you will learn from this blog — and wish your library did something similar.

Scottish Genealogy Tips Tricks & Tidbits – Christine Woodcock is a Scottish researcher based in southern Ontario who shares resources about once a week.

Writing Up the Ancestors – Montreal writer Janice Hamilton writes about her ancestors who lived in Canada, the US, England, Scotland, and Ireland. What sets this blog apart from many are the research remarks Janice adds at the end of each story.

There are many other great Canadian genealogy bloggers. Who should be added to the list?
