Findmypast to publish 1921 England and Wales census online

The National Archives yesterday announced the contract to publish the 1921 Census of England, Wales and Scotland online has been awarded to Findmypast, in association with the Office for National Statistic.

The census will be published in January 2022.

Taken on June 19,  1921, this census provides greater detail than any previously published.

In addition to the questions asked in 1911, the 1921 returns asked householders to reveal their place of employment, what materials they worked in, and their employer’s name. Those aged 15 and older were required to provide information about their marital status, including if divorced, while for those under 15 the census recorded whether both parents were alive or if either or both had died.

There was no 1921 Census of Ireland because of the civil war. The majority of the island of Ireland became the Irish Free State and the first census was taken in 1926. As for the 1921 Census of Scotland, I expect ScotlandsPeople will publish that one.
