President and CEO Guy Cormier of Desjardins Group announced last Thursday his financial cooperative group will donate $150,000 the the Morrin Centre, an English language cultural centre in Quebec City, to “build an immersive exhibit on the history of capital punishment.”
The exhibit will open in May 2019 at the Morrin Centre, which houses cells from Quebec City’s former common jail. The jail closed in 1867, replaced by the prison on the Plains of Abraham.
Mr. Cormier made the announcement during his opening remarks at the Morrin Centre’s Literary Fest when he also said, “It’s important for all of us to acknowledge the contribution of those who arrived here from England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland, as well as the Loyalists from the US. Many of these people were entrepreneurs, and they played a pivotal role in shaping the communities in and around Quebec City.”
Desjardins Group’s donation is made through its$100-million development fund which was launched in 2016 to support and promote projects in Quebec and Ontario that are in line with the company’s socio-economic mission to bolster entrepreneurship, education, social responsibility, sustainable development and community involvement.
