O, Canada! Free access to Ancestry’s Canadian collection, and DNA kit sale

Note: I was wrong about this free access offer. It is only for free access to Canadian census records, not to all Canadian records. Not much of an offer since the census records are available on Library and Archives Canada’s website. See link below.

To celebrate Canada Day, Ancestry.ca is providing free access to its Canadian records, from June 28, 2018 to July 2, 2018 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern time.

My understanding is that the offer is for free access to much more than the Canadian census records. If the offer is only for the census records, it’s not that exciting since the Canadian census records are already available online for free on Library and Archives Canada’s website.

So, if this offer is for all Canadian records on Ancestry, you may want to check out Ontario births, marriages, and death, Quebec’s Drouin collection of baptisms, marriages, and burials, voters lists, and Quebec notary records. The homestead records for Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba are also worth exploring.

In the case of the notary records, there are two collections with almost identical names: Quebec, Canada, Notarial Records, 1637-1935, with more than 16 million records; and Quebec Notarial Records (Drouin Collection), 1647-1942, with only 1,000 records. Don’t do what a friend of my did and only look at the smaller collection.

To receive free access, you must register. After the free access period ends, you will only be able to view the records in the featured collections using an Ancestry.ca paid membership or World Delux membership.

AncestryDNA kits
The Canada Day promotions continue.

AncestryDNA kits are on sale for shipping to Canadian addresses — $89 plus $20 shipping, including taxes. This is down from the regular price of $129 plus shipping. This offer ends July 3, 2018.
