GRO extends pilot to deliver digitized birth and death records

According to an article published yesterday in Who Do You Think You Are? magazine, the General Register Office (GRO) has confirmed that its latest pilot scheme to deliver PDF copies of birth and death records for England and Wales, dating back to 1837, has been a success and will be extended.

This extension is great news for those of us who have put off ordering these records.

“By allowing family historians to order digital copies of records at £6 each with a 5-working day delivery period, it provides a cheaper and quicker alternative to ordering print copies, which cost £9.25 each or £23.40 for priority deliveries.”

Thanks for letting us know about the further extension. I have already obtained 4 digital copies – one was incorrect (their error) but once I told them about the error they fixed it in a short time. I am very satisfied with the results.
Also, at the low price I sent in for a birth registration of which I was unsure. It did not yield the results I had hoped for. So, I noted that I had a digital copy of a birth for a certain person on the website for that county in England. Lo and behold… I was contacted by someone in that very county who is related. He is going to help me find to whom the certificate belongs while giving me some valuable info about our family.
I am sorry that they are not extending this service to marriage records…

Someday they will discover it would be financially more advantageous and less time consuming to sell them to Ancestry.

I’m so thrilled! The digital copies are so much faster and easier, though this time, they did make a mistake with one of my death certs – the one with a crucial piece of info, however, I’m confident they will fix it 🙂

I understand the problem with the marriages is that they aren’t yet digitized, so it’s lots of extra work. I’d love marriages too, but right now B/D are just grand!
