Take a tour of Canada’s oldest prison

Tickets for tours of the Kingston Penitentiary — Canada’s oldest and most notorious maximum security prison — went on sale this week.

The Kingston, Ontario prison opened in 1835 as the Provincial Penitentiary of the Province of Upper Canada. In 2013, it closed and was designated a National Historic Site of Canada.

The first public tours start on Tuesday, May 9 and run six days per week (closed Mondays) until June 30. Tours run every 15 minutes starting at 8:30 a.m., with the last tour departure at sunset. They are not recommended for children.  Tours are offered in French at the noon departure time.

Starting Monday, June 19 until September 3, tours will be offered daily.

In the fall, the tours will revert to the six days per week schedule from September 5 to October 29, including Thanksgiving Monday, October 9.

Pricing
Tickets are $35 per person for the 90-minute standard tour and $55 per person for the new 2.5-hour premium tour.

Tickets can be purchased on the Kingston Pen Tours website.
