We’re into the third day of National Volunteer Week, from April 23 to 29, 2017, and this year’s theme is Volunteering, eh? How do you recognize volunteering in 2017?
Almost every genealogist has benefitted from the services of a volunteer. Genealogy societies are entirely or almost entirely run by volunteers. Much of the indexing and transcription projects, research, and education programs are done by volunteers. On genealogy Facebook groups, people help each other every day with their research problems.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in a statement, “National Volunteer Week is a time to celebrate Canadian volunteers and thank them for the selfless work they do to help those around them. As we mark the 150th anniversary of Confederation in 2017, we honour the essential contributions volunteers make to our country, this week and throughout the year.”
Motivation
One of the toughest challenges for a genealogy society is recruiting and retaining volunteers. A couple of years ago, I wrote an article about how to motivate volunteers.
