The Provincial Archives of New Brunswick recently added 11,765 births and 926 late registrations of birth for the year 1921 to its online index.
The Index to Provincial Registrations of Births 1870 – 1921 can be searched for free on the Archives’ website.
The index provides the name of the child, sex, date and location of birth, parents’ names, and microfilm number. In the case of births from 1870 to 1919, these records have been digitized and are available on the Archives’ website.
For now, the actual birth registrations for 1920 and 1921 are only available on microfilm, but you can still learn important information in the index. The archives says on its website, “We are not currently able to add the digital images of the records but are working to do so and will provide updates when there is a change to this situation.”
For 1920 and 1921, take note of the microfilm number and reference code in the index. The films can be viewed at the provincial archives in Fredericton or at a library participating in the inter-library or inter-archives microfilm loan program.
Civil registration of births, marriages, and deaths was required in New Brunswick in 1887. Prior to that there was no requirement to record births nor a system in place to collect and preserve such information.
