The Ottawa Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society has been quietly working on their Conference 2017 website and the program went live on the weekend.
You can now see the full list of presentations, descriptions, and speakers by clicking on the Program tab, from Thursday to Monday, as well as other activities under the Special Events tab.
The conference will be held June 16 to 18, 2017 at Algonquin College in Ottawa, with excursions and a pub night on June 15 and Ancestry Day on June 19.
Book early
If you are thinking about attending the conference, you are advised to book your accommodations early. Ottawa is expected to be an even more popular tourist destination than usual next year.
Canadian theme
The overall theme of the conference is Canada with presentations about genealogy research in many provinces, along with a variety of other topics.
In the call for presentations last year, the Ontario Genealogical Society said, “As 2017 will be the 150th anniversary of the birth of Canada, Ottawa Branch OGS will host the annual OGS conference and give the Conference a national flair, bringing together genealogists and family historians from all over Canada.”
Quebec genealogy research will be covered with what may be a record number of four speakers from la belle province.
I’ll be speaking at the conference Sunday morning about the Crème de la Crème of Online Resources for Quebec Research, and I hope to have a few surprises for the audience.
Sunday afternoon, Sharon Callaghan, an expert in Quebec land and notary records, will deliver a must-attend presentation, Quebec Notary Records—Primary Resource for Ancestors’ Documents. One of the 12 workshops on Friday will be led by Gary Schroder who will talk about Quebec church records, and Saturday morning Johanne Gervais will talk about the French Canadian Disease.
Conference registration is expected to open December 1.
