McCord Museum is conducting two 90-minute walking tours in July and August in the heart of two emblematic downtown Montreal neighbourhoods, the Golden Square Mile and Milton Parc.
The first of the twice-weekly July tours, The Prestigious Golden Square Mile, Yesterday and Today, began July 9. Included in your ticket is a short introduction and access to the photo exhibition, Montreal Mansions, 1974 at McCord Museum.
Since the 19th century, the neighbourhood of the Golden Square Mile has been synonymous with luxury due to its mansions as well as department stores, university buildings and luxury hotels. On the tour, you will discover typical architecture of the Golden Square Mile as well as the history of former inhabitants.
Starting in August, the tour will be The Rescue of an Emblematic Neighbourhood: Milton Parc and Notman House. This tour ends at Notman House’s Café Osmo where you will be able to enjoy a drink that is included in the tour price.
The charming neighbourhood of Milton Parc, also commonly known by Montrealers as the McGill Ghetto due to its high concentration of university residents, holds a unique ensemble of Montreal architecture, mostly of family mansions from the 19th century. During this tour, you will learn more about the neighbourhood’s architectural heritage, the struggles of the citizens who wanted to maintain its human touch, the neighbourhood’s enhancement and the different building vocations throughout history.
