Genealogy travelling just became more fun — and more like Dick Tracy

Travelling for genealogists became easier in July when Google announced Google Translate can translate 44 languages on a smartphone. Now, travelling has become even more fun – and more like a cross between a science fiction movie and a Dick Tracy comic.

Google Translate can now be used on all Android Wear watches.

Imagine. You can have bilingual conversations with an archivist in Germany by speaking into your watch.

Speak into your watch to see your words translated. Flip your wrist to show the translation to the archivist. When they respond in German, flip your wrist back, and you’ll see what they just said in English.

According to the Google Translate Blog, Google Translate will automatically recognize which of the two languages is being spoken. So, once you tap to start the conversation, all you and the archivist need do is keep talking naturally.

Knowing how odd Google Translate’s translations can be at times, I imagine some of the conversations will be humourous. But, oh, what fun.
