There are two events taking place in Ottawa in March that make Canada’s capital the place to be if you are a genealogist.
Ulster Historical Foundation Lecture Day
On Saturday, March 14, the British Isles Family History Society of Greater Ottawa (BIFHSGO) will host Ulster Historical Foundation Lecture Day, which is an opportunity attend an entire day of lectures about Irish genealogical research by Gilian Hunt and Fintan Mullan. The morning lectures are part of BIFHSGO’s monthly meeting and free. The afternoon lectures are available for only $10 per person. Tickets will be sold at the door as long as they last.
The morning lectures begin at 9:00 a.m. and will cover Unique Challenges of Irish Genealogy and Records Related to the Different Churches in Ireland. From 1:00 to 5:00 p.m., there will be four lectures: census substitutes for 18th and 19th centuries; tracing farming families in the 18th and 19th centuries; understanding Irish townlands; and solving your brick walls.
These lectures will take place at The Chamber, Ben Franklin Place, 101 Centrepointe Drive, Nepean. More information is available on BIFHSGO’s website.
Gene-O-Rama
On Friday evening and all day Saturday, March 27 and 28, the Ontario Genealogical Society Ottawa Branch will host Gene-O-Rama.
The Pat Horan Memorial Lecture, Castlecomer to Montague: A Case Study in Irish Protestant Immigration to Upper Canada, will be delivered by Janice Nickerson on Friday, and it is open for free to the public.
Speakers on Saturday will be Janice Nickerson, Robin Etherington, Lesley Anderson, Glenn Wright, Shirley Ann Pyefinch, Carol Reid, and David G. Anderson, and Dave Mullington will deliver the keynote speech at the banquet. Topics include Upper Canada research, Ontario vital records, the Rideau Canal and its workers; military history research, and the early settlement of Glengarry.
Tickets are $47 for the all-day event on Saturday. (Lunch and the banquet are extra.)
Take note of the Gene-O-Rama Marketplace on Friday evening and Saturday that will be open to the public.
