Young readers book about War of 1812 to be launched today in Ottawa

Want to get the nine to 14-year-old in your family interested in the War of 1812? Encourage them to read the novel, Brothers at War, and the about-to-be-launched A Hanging Offence by Don Cummer. They are also good books for young-at-heart adults.

A Hanging Offence will be launched in Ottawa today, Wednesday, February 4, at the Georgetown Sportspub, 1159 Bank Street in Ottawa, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Join the author and the 100th (Prince Regent’s County of Dublin) Regiment for food, drinks, and lively storytelling. The 100th Regiment is an Ottawa-based group of re-enactors.

"A Hanging Offence" by Don Cummer will be released February 1, 2015.

“A Hanging Offence” by Don Cummer will be released February 1, 2015.

This new book, a sequel to Brothers at War, finds best friends Jacob and Eli on opposite sides of the battlefield as the War of 1812 erupts.

Jacob and Eli may be blood brothers, but they are on opposite sides in the battle of Queenston Heights during the War of 1812. While Jacob joins John Norton’s Mohawk band fighting with the British-Canadian side, Eli fights with the Americans. The Canadians win the day, but the victory comes at a great cost: the death of General Brock. Eli is captured and jailed. Because he swore the oath of allegiance to the Crown before he left Canada, his return with the invaders makes him a traitor. He is charged with high treason — a hanging offence. Can Jacob save his friend from the gallows?

Both books are published by Scholastic and available at Chapters Indigo, Amazon.ca, and other fine book stores. A Nook book version can be found at Barnes & Noble in the US. If your book store does not have a copy on their shelves, ask them to order it for you.
