The Société d’histoire et de généalogie de Matane in Quebec’s Gaspé Peninsula is celebrating its 65th anniversary this year. It was founded in 1949 and added généalogie to its name in 1986.

The society started with a small museum in a local school. Today, it has 400 members with about a dozen living outside the country.

The future looks promising for the society. An agreement with the city will enable the society to hire a coordinator who will organize and promote activities in the region.

The society has produced several publications, including Au pays de Matane that was published 50 years ago and several genealogy documents.

The Fédération des sociétés d’histoire estimates that there are about 300 similar groups in Quebec.
