In recognition of the Acadian National Holiday on August 15 and the 5th Acadian World Congress that took place August 8 to 24, the Canadian Encyclopedia is featuring an exhibit exploring different aspects of Acadian culture.
“Arriving in North America some 400 years ago, Acadians have established oral and written traditions through which they affirm their identity. From the characters in Antonine Maillet’s La Sagouine to the fiercely modern poetry of Herménégilde Chiasson, from the songs of Édith Butler to the chiac rap of Radio Radio, the art and culture of Acadia are at the forefront of this living identity.”

It’s been many years since I first saw “La Sagouine”, but I can still remember it being performed at my high school (Ecole Secondaire Thériault, as it was then named) in Timmins, Ontario in the early 1970s. I believe Viola Léger was in the title role.
It possibly was Viola Léger. I think La Sagouine was her signature role.
