British historian Martin Middlebrook to speak in Ottawa about WWI

First Day on the SommeMartin Middlebrook, British historian and author of The First Day on the Somme, will present two free special lectures in Ottawa on September 4 and 5.

On Thursday, September 4, at 7:00 p.m., at the Canadian War Museum, Mr. Middlebrooke will trace the path of a First World War new recruit and tell the story of how infantry soldiers were trained and mobilized to the Western Front.

On Friday, September 5, at noon, Mr. Middlebrook will be at the Bytown Museum to discuss events of 1914 that led to the 1916 Battle of the Somme and the social aspects of the British Army. His presentation, The Somme, 1916 – Why did it happen? Why is it so powerfully remembered, particularly among two classes of the British society?, will be delivered in English. Bilingual staff will be available following the lecture to answer questions.
