Historic Southwestern Ontario newspapers digitized

Norfolk County Archives in Simcoe, Ontario announced this month the launch of a new online newspaper database that holds more than 60,000 pages of local newspapers, covering the years 1860 to 1971.

The digitized newspapers are:

British Canadian
Delhi News Record
Erie News
Norfolk Observer
Norfolk Reformer
Port Dover Maple Leaf
Simcoe Reformer
Waterford Star

After the Port Dover Maple, the greatest number of pages digitized so far are from the British Canadian, from 1874 to 1926. The British Canadian was a four-page weekly newspaper published in Sandwich at a subscription cost of 10 shillings per annum. The newspaper’s motto was “Our country’s welfare first, and then we stand by honest party men.” It had a circulation of almost 500.

The newspapers are searchable by keyword. You can download the entire page as a PDF. To clip just an article within the page, use a snipping tool or download one to your laptop. (I use the free Snip & Sketch for Windows, but there are others. Simply Google snipping tool to find one that will work for you.)

The county archives said more content will be added as the project progresses.
