An estimated 20 million Canadians and Americans are descended from one of more of the Filles du roi who were sent to New France in the mid-1600s.
From 1663 to 1673, 770 Frenchwomen settled in Canada. Their marriages led to 4,500 births, tripling the population of New France.
Now, Geneanet, the Paris-based genealogy website, is asking for volunteers to work on a collaborative tree to identify and research each of these young women, along with their ancestors and descendants.
Geneanet says, “We are looking for volunteers to continue the work already begun. Nothing complicated, all that’s required is a working knowledge of how to enter data in Geneanet online trees. We will provide you with Admin access. You add your name to the project spreadsheet, and then you provide the time you wish. There are no obligations.”
Learn more about the project in Geneanet’s blog post and see the family tree that has been built so far. The information about the tree is in English and French.
