Ontario Ancestors’ virtual presentations this week — New France, Empress of Ireland, Chippewas of the Thames First Nation, Orillia Public Library

Three of Ontario Ancestors’ branches and a special interest group will be hosting virtual and hybrid presentations this week. All are free and open to the public.

The times are in Eastern time.

Monday, May 29, 7:30 p.m. — Toronto Branch
Scandal, Slavery and Survival:  More Tales from New France by Dawn Kelly and Carol Ufford

Popular speakers Dawn Kelly and Carol Ufford return to share more stories of New France. We’ll hear tales of a man whose widow caused a scandal when she remarried after he was captured by the Iroquois, a salt smuggler, the little-known story of slave owners in New France and more!
 
The evening will begin with Diana Thomson presenting The Saga of a Boy of the Third Class about her 4X granduncle, an Australian pioneer settler.
 
This will be a hybrid meeting. Join in person at Lansing United Church to hear the speakers’ live presentations, or register to attend virtually via Zoom.

Chippewas of the Thames First Nation – The Longwoods Treaties by Brandon Graham

June is National Indigenous History Month. To recognize and celebrate the three local indigenous communities in Middlesex County, we have invited Brandon Graham, Chippewa, Treaty Research Coordinator with the Treaties, Lands & Environment Department at the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation, to join us and tell us more about the Longwoods Treaties. He will focus on the ongoing histories of the McKee Treaty (1790), the London Township & Sombra Township Treaties (1796), and the Longwoods Treaty (1822).
