Ontario Ancestors webinars this week — Railways, researching from home, Ulster Scots, and miracles

There are four free online presentations at Ontario Ancestors this week, including one in Ottawa that is also in person. All are open to the public.

The times are in Eastern time.

Monday, February 6, 7:00 p.m. — Leeds & Grenville Branch
Rail History in Eastern Ontario by Craig Stevenson

Join us for a presentation on Rail History in Eastern Ontario and its relationship to local history and genealogy. Craig will discuss a few areas where rail was most visible in local life through to about 1960: stations, agricultural and economic connections, impact on the geography of some communities, and where and how railways connect to social history. Register.

Tuesday, February 7, 7:30 p.m. — Durham Region Branch
Doing Family Tree Research in Your Pajamas by Ken McKinlay

With the challenges resulting from the pandemic, we still have to contend with many restrictions when it comes to visiting our favourite archives and museums. Fortunately we still have a vast array of resources available to us online with more coming out every week. In this presentation, Ken will touch upon the various online resources and tools that permit us to continue researching the various branches of our family trees, all without leaving the comfort and safety of our homes. Register.

Wednesday, February 8, 10:00 a.m. — Scottish SIG
Researching Ulster Scots by William Roulston

Register.

Saturday, February 11, 1:00 p.m. — Ottawa Branch
Genealogical Miracles by Ken McKinlay

We will be taking a sometimes humorous look at some of the very interesting gaffs and errors that can be found in family trees such as “Resurrection,” “The well preserved,” and “Time travellers.” At the same time we will cover how to hopefully prevent those pesky mistakes in our own trees. This is a hybrid meeting — both in person and online. Register for the online presentation.
