Three-part Ontario land records series with Ken McKinlay

Ontario Ancestors will host a three-part series, All About Ontario Land Records, presented by Ken McKinlay.

This is an in-depth learning opportunity that will provide family historians with the tools they need to find their Ontario ancestors in these records.

Mr. McKinlay will explain the ins and outs of Ontario land records, including using the Government of Ontario’s OnLand system.

There’s even better news for registrants. The videos will be available after the event.

The cost for the series is $30 for members and $35 for non-members.

Here’s what we have to look forward to.

Ontario Land Records – Finding the Property

One of the challenges we face when trying to pinpoint where our rural Ontario ancestors lived is finding records with information such as the township, concession, and lot. Knowing this information is the starting place for finding land instruments such as deeds and even wills. In this session, Ken will show  how to find that information using census records, directories, voters’ lists, and other publicly available records.

Ontario Land Records – Exploring OnLand Through a Family Researcher’s Eyes

Once we know where our ancestors lived in Ontario we often want to learn more about the land transactions. Ken will guide us through using the Ontario Land Property Records Portal, aka OnLand, to locate the pages in the various books available on that site. We will even walk through the sometimes confusing process of ordering a land record from OnLand.

March 31, 7:00 p.m. Eastern time
Ontario Land Records – Exploring FamilySearch’s Ontario Land Record Books

Once we know where our ancestors lived in Ontario we often want to learn more about the land transactions. Ken will guide us through using FamilySearch and their vast collection of land-related records to discover what is held within the Abstract Registers, General Registers, Land Record Books, and Township Books. There we might uncover land deeds, mortgages, wills, and other interesting documents that may shed some light on the lives of our ancestors in Ontario.
