Forgotten Pioneers: The Black Settlements of Wellington County by Kyle Smith, Activity Programmer, Wellington County Museum and Archives

Facing almost unimaginable hardships a group of hardy pioneers built a land and a home in the heart of Wellington County. These people, Black Canadians, left their mark on our landscape in so many ways and yet their story is only largely unknown in the wider community.

During the 1800s large groups of Black Canadian settlers settled in Wellington County in a variety of places including the Pierpoint settlement near Fergus, and the Queens Bush near Glen Allen, which at its peak in the 1840s had a population of over 1500 Black Canadians. These hardy survivors were amongst the very first non-native settlers to this area and their story of survival is the story of how our local area began.

Join Kyle Smith as we look through archival photographs and personal narratives, and talk about some of the personalities who built these settlements, why they flourished here, but also why these settlements eventually disappeared, and why don’t more people know about them today? Registration is required.
