Okanagan, British Columbia newspapers digitized

British Columbia Regional Digitized History (BCRDH) recently announced that online access to back issues of two Okanagan newspapers, the Penticton Herald, 1906-1959, and Vernon News, 1891-1950, are now available.

The Vernon News, like a lot of local newspapers, had a section that reported on the social news in the community. Image from August 1, 1946, page 5.

Before starting to browse or search these newspapers or any other collection on the website, it is best to review the Navigating and Searching in BCRDN section, which is a quick read in the online Toolkit. Reading the tips, along with taking advantage of the search filters, will help narrow down the search results.

When first exploring an issue of the newspaper,
pass your mouse over each of the tools to see what they do.

To find your search term in a selected issue of the newspaper, click on the Show Full Screen, located in the top right corner, to enlarge the image.

Then, click on the orange location tag along the bottom to open the page where your search term appears.

Clicking on the magnifying glass with the plus sign will enlarge the page so that you can see the your highlighted search term.

Use the Share button on the top to email the newspaper page or to share it on social media.

To clip a specific newspaper article, use a free tool, such as Snip & Sketch that can be downloaded to your PC or the snipping tool for Mac.

BCRDH is a regional partnership involving the University of British Columbia’s Okanagan Campus Library and numerous community memory institutions.
