In Saturday’s eWeekly Update newsletter, Ontario Ancestors listed more than two dozen webinars the society and branches are offering throughout the month of October. Most webinars, if not all, are free to the public, but registration is required.
Five of the webinars are scheduled for this week. Next week, there are eight webinars.

Here are this week’s webinars. All times for the following webinars are in Eastern time.
Monday, Oct. 4 – 7:00 p.m. – Leeds & Grenville Branch
Village of Athens (Farmersville) by Sally Smid
The village of Athens (formerly known as Farmersville) is in the centre of Leeds & Grenville Counties. Henry and Sally Smid’s presentation will include the story of Athens and Area Heritage Society Museum from its beginnings to its continued development. The museum has provided a variety of exhibits, events, and presentations over the years and has experienced the challenges of being a small rural museum. Innovation and technology have been a part of the COVID years. The museum has recently begun to upload its extensive archives and looks forward to future activities as pandemic regulations are lifted.
Tuesday, Oct. 5 – 7:30 p.m. – Durham Branch
Search Tips: Researching Women on Ancestry by Lesley Anderson
This session will provide strategies for searching for women in the Ancestry databases, including methods to uncover females using name variations and other search techniques. Famous or interesting women will be highlighted wherever possible using the new Ancestry databases from around the world, as well as the core record groups. The presentation will appeal to new and experienced researchers alike.
Wednesday, Oct. 6 – 7:30 p.m. – Huron Branch
Female Preachers of the Bible Christian Church: the impact of the church on immigration to Huron and those that served by Jim Bowen
Thursday, Oct. 7 – 7:00 p.m. – Ontario Ancestors
How to Find a Will in Court Records by Lindsey Winstone
Reference Archivist Lindsey Winstone will show you how to find pre-1976 wills and estate files in court records that are held at the Archives of Ontario. These records can hold a great deal of information about genealogical ties and assets (such as land!) that may have been passed on to heirs and possibly to your ancestors. In cases where a will does not exist, alternative records to search for more information will be indicated. This webinar will be suitable for researchers just starting to explore their family history in Ontario, or for those who are more advanced in their research.
Register here. A recording will be available for society members afterward.
Friday, Oct. 8 – 7:00 p.m. – Kent Branch
The Woman in the Photo – Discovering My Indigenous Heritage by Rachel Cyr
Ms. Cyr will discuss how her research into the mysterious Captain Keating of Chatham eventually led to discovering her Ojibwe roots from Wikwemikong and St. Joseph Island.
A list of the branches’ webinars and links to register for them can be found on the Ontario Ancestors Events Calendar. The province-wide organization’s webinars appear on the Upcoming Webinars page.
