Happy 250th anniversary to North America’s oldest continuous-running newspaper, the Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph. Originally published as a bilingual newspaper, called The Quebec Gazette – La Gazette de Québec, the newspaper was founded in Quebec City on June 21, 1764 by William Brown — and genealogists have been pleased with him almost ever since.
On her blog, Genealogy Canada, Elizabeth Lapointe writes that Charles André Nadeau will talk about the history of newspaper at the Morrin Centre in Quebec City on Wednesday, June 18.
Could a wealthy philanthropist please support the digitization of all editions of this newspaper? Now, that would be even more cause to celebrate.
In the meantime, much of this newspaper has been digitized and issues are at least browsable: The Quebec Gazette, 1775 – 1943, and the Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph, 1953 – 1970.
