Plenty of presentations on the Genealogical Society of Ireland’s YouTube channel

Since in-person genealogy events have been postponed or cancelled for the foreseeable future — and all the St. Patrick’s Day parades have been cancelled — there are lots of online learning opportunities we can all benefit from while in self-isolation.

The Genealogical Society of Ireland, for example, has a number of videos on its YouTube channel.

I plan to watch 19th Century Valuation of Ireland, presented by Frances McGee.

Between 1830 and 1865 every property in Ireland was valued. This work created a very large archive of documents that is now a major source for information on 19th-century families, communities, land, and buildings. Ms. McGee explains the valuation and the information that can be found in the archives.

A recent presentation that caught my eye me was Townlands, Maps and Directories, presented by Shane Wilson, who explains how to navigate and use his (new-to-me) website, swilson.info.

There are about 40 presentations available on the Genealogical Society of Ireland’s YouTube channel.

Merci buckets, Gail! We have so much we can do now that libraries, gyms, community centres, and many shops are closed/closing. Now’s the time to clean off our desks, file those pieces of paper, and reward ourselves with another free webinar or two… or more! Thanks so much for posting this example! Cheers from the west coast.

    Thank you Gail.
