France approves genetic genealogy tests

The French Senate adopted at first reading yesterday the amendment to a bill to authorize genetic genealogy tests in France. Right now, consumer DNA tests are illegal there.

The bill states that testing a person’s DNA may be done for the purpose of genealogical research, to look for possible family relationships, and to estimate geographical origins.

There were probably a lot of smiling faces at Ancestry and MyHeritage, two companies that already have a French website and provide DNA kits with French instructions.

There were also a lot of happy people on the International Society of Genetic Genealogy Facebook group that was one of the first to share the good news.
