La France aux Amériques: Library and Archives Canada to participate in web project

Library and Archives Canada (LAC) yesterday entered into a collaborative arrangement with the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF) to create the website, La France aux Amériques.

In the announcement, LAC said, “This information source will bring together exceptional heritage documents that bear witness to the interactions between France and the Americas.”

LAC has become a key partner in this project, joining American contributors such as the Library of Congress, the National Archives and Records Administration, the Yale and Harvard university libraries, and the New York Public Library. Project partners on the French side include the Archives nationales d’outre‑mer, the Diplomatic Archives, and the Rouen and Bordeaux municipal libraries.

LAC and BnF also took the opportunity to sign a more general agreement that confirms their willingness to share the expertise of their respective staff over the next few years.

At this time a year ago, the Library of Congress in the United States and BnF announced a collaboration to provide digital content for a new online space for collections relating to shared French-American history.

A few months later, in September, the New York Public Library and BnF signed an agreement to share existing digital images and metadata for use online and by researchers and digitize collections around areas of mutual interest related to heritage.
