Nova Scotia Archives needs volunteer transcribers

Nova Scotia Archives is looking for volunteers to transcribe its digitized records of pre-1867 Sable Island to help “document the flora, fauna, people, industry and history of the Island” and allow better access to the public.

The archives’ crowdsourcing initiative, appropriately named Transcribe, provides the public with an opportunity to transcribe handwritten historical documents from home.

Volunteers can also transcribe the Charitable Irish Society records. These records once belonged to the society that was founded in Halifax in 1786 by “gentlemen, merchants and others” who pledged to help their poor and indigent countrymen and their descendants.

Transcribe is a test project, which is why the archives is starting small. They do, however, plan to add more documents as they learn more about the technology and how people use it.

Both transcription projects can be found on the Transcribe web page.
