Canada’s most prolific genealogy blogger, John D. Reid, has reached an extraordinary milestone that few of us can ever imagine achieving.
This week, he wrote his 10,000th blog post.
For 13 years, John has been writing daily posts on what has become the second-longest running genealogy blog in Canada, Canada’s Anglo-Celtic Connections, and it is probably in the top ten in the English-speaking genealogy world.
If you’re a genealogist and not following John’s blog, you’re missing out on a tremendous amount of information.
Every day, John writes two or three — or sometimes four — blog posts. He writes about new genealogy resources, national and provincial archives, tips, upcoming meetings and conferences, trends, DNA tests, and even the weather.
The blog was first called Anglo-Celtic Connections when launched in March 2006. A few years later, John changed the name to Canada’s Anglo-Celtic Connections to better reflect the content.
Throughout the years, the blog has attracted a large number of followers, including fellow bloggers, who look forward to reading what’s new in the world of genealogy and learning about John’s opinion on a particular record collection, product, or initiative.
In a congratulatory comment on John’s blog, Jane Down in Ottawa yesterday wrote, “I read your blog every morning as I eat my breakfast. … What I like most is that your posts are short, informative nuggets, with links to more comprehensive articles if there are any.”
Author and lecturer Glenn Wright, also in Ottawa, wrote, “Thank you for alerting us to British resources, the weather in history and your insight on all matters relevant to us.”
Ontario Ancestors, in an eWeekly Update article on March 16 about the 13th anniversary of Canada’s Anglo-Celtic Connections, wrote, “John keeps us informed about genealogy events happening around home and around the world, keeps Library and Archives Canada’s collective feet to the fire in its digitization efforts, and provides statistical and weather-related posts to educate and amuse us. ”
Lorine McGinnis Schulze, who writes Canada’s longest-running blog, Olive Tree Genealogy, said, “Congratulations, John, on writing such a terrific blog and completing 10,000 articles. I’m looking forward to the next 10,000.”
In 2014, John inspired me to start writing my own blog, Genealogy à la carte. He holds the bar very high. Just when I think I can almost see it, John writes a blog post that sets the bar even higher. I’ve often said, after reading one of his posts, “Gosh, I wish I’d written that one.”
Congratulations, John. Through your blog, I’ve learned a lot about genealogy and blogging.
Like your many followers, I couldn’t start my day without you.
Launched in March 2019? Typo…?
You’re right. Thanks for letting me know. Typo corrected.
Typo: The blog was first called Anglo-Celtic Connections when launched in March 2019.
Thanks. I’ve now corrected the date.
