Happy birthday, Montreal!

CandlesJoyeux anniversaire, Montréal!

On this day — May 17 — 372 years ago, Paul de Chomedey de Maisonneuve and Jeanne Mance founded Montreal, then known as Ville-Marie.

Plans are already underway for a memorable 375th anniversary in 2017. One initiative I especially look forward to is the Pointe-à-Callière Museum’s plan to “lay bare” the remains of St. Anne’s Market, the former Parliament of United Canada, Fort Ville-Marie, Callière’s residence, and the former Montreal General Hospital. This museum of archaeology and history also plans to restore the Central Fire Station.

I expect local genealogy and historical societies will soon start brainstorming ideas on how their organization can contribute to the celebration.

Merci à Madame O’Leery for the reminder.
