As part of its Jamboree Webinar Extension Series, the Southern California Genealogical Society will host the free webinar, When It Takes a Village: Applying Cluster Research Techniques, presented by Emily Garber, Wednesday, March 21, at 9:00 p.m. Eastern time.
Ms. Garber will outline a program for solving research problems via cluster, also known as the FAN (friends, associates, and neighbours) principle to make the most of the clues their records may provide and DNA analysis.
During her presentation, Ms. Garber will discuss a case study chronicling her search for Feiga Grinfeld, who accompanied her great-grandfather, Avrum Garber, when he arrived at Ellis Island in 1922. Her search for Feiga took her from New York City, to Kentucky, to Ohio, and to Detroit. It involved following possible townspeople, relatives, and in-laws of relatives. Tracking Feiga and determining her relationship to Avrum Garber involved the use of passenger manifests; state and federal census records; city directories; newspapers; death records; marriage records in Ohio, New York and Montana; tombstones; postcards; interviews with relatives; and both Y-DNA and autosomal DNA testing.
The live webinar is free to all. Register here. A recording of the webinar will be available to society members afterward.
