BAnQ digitizes book on history of the Sherbrooke Regiment

One of the latest books the Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ) has digitized is The Sherbrooke Regiment (12th Armoured Regiment), published in 1958.

The book, in addition to being about the long, storied account of the Sherbrooke Regiment, is about the genealogy of a regiment that can trace its roots back to the Loyalists who settled in the Eastern Townships after the American War of Independence. In later years, the regiment, or battalion as it was called prior to May 1900, served in the Fenian Raids, Rebellions of 1837 in Lower Canada, and both World Wars.

This 229-page regimental history was written by Lt.-Col. H.M. Jackson of Aylmer East, Quebec, who was the director of war service records at the Department of Veterans Affairs and an experienced regimental historian. He wrote books about several regiments before his death in 1961.

The Sherbrooke Regiment is illustrated with a number of photos, all captioned with the names of the men in them.

Appendices
While the names of many officers appear throughout the book, the appendices list enlisted men, regimental staff and company commanders.

The two rolls of honour list the men who died during WWI and WWII, and Post-War Deaths lists men who died after serving in those wars. The list of casualties is another place to look for family surnames.

The military researcher, in particular, will be interested in reading Appendix O, Rifle Shooting, about the early drills and the types of arms used throughout the years.
