Up to 50% off at Ancestry — new subscribers only (again)

Until January 7, new subscribers can save up to 50 percent at Ancestry on a six-month subscription. I understand the sale is 50 percent off a Canada Discovery membership and 30 percent off a World Explorer membership.

Some people have posted on Facebook that their subscription was about to expire in a week or two, so they called Ancestry. To make them a new subscriber, the Ancestry representative cancelled their last two weeks and then sold them a new subscription.

Loyal members need not apply.

Once again, Ancestry rewards those who have never subscribed and those who let their subscription lapse. Long-time subscribers are not rewarded for loyalty and must pay the full rate.

For that reason, in a few months, after 12 years of non-stop subscribing to the World Explorer membership, I may not renew to find out how long it takes before I am rewarded with a discount.

I got a notice from ancestry.ca that offered 50% off 12 month Discovery Canada for $90 & 12 month World Deluxe for $150. Both offers expire Jan 9.

I had dumped them for 6 months and gone to the library; I had managed to get a deal for 2 years in a row for $179 but they wouldn’t extend it. This is an even better deal.

However it is free at my Ottawa library as is the Quebec Genealogy site so I’m of 2 minds but it is convenient to have at home.

from my experience you will have to wait about 6 months. And then you will be bombarded.

Yes, so much for being a long time customer, don’t think loyalty is in their vocabulary.
I’ve been a subscriber since 2004 when they started. I now let my subscription lapse and wait for a good offer. I simply use my other paid sites to research in the interim. There are so many resource out there to keep one busy. If you’re paying full price, then consider taking a monthly subscription at different companies, one a at time, work on the site and then move on to another.
Also, with the growing interest of DNA before you know it months fly by. I like to be patient and be frugal, guess it’s the Scot in me!

I have also had the World Subscription for 12 years and not renewing sounds like a plan for me too.

  5. Ann says:

I’ve found that the length of time before I receive several offers varies based on the answers I give in the exit interview.

“Just taking a break” will delay the deluge, while answering “I’m done” or “It’s too expensive” brings offers more quickly.

My experience has been similar to others who commented on both the value of waiting for a better offer, and spending time on other sites until Ancestry capitulates. After cancelling at the end of February last year, I had a couple of 20% offers followed by 30%, and capitulated in mid-April for 40% – told a friend who had cancelled just before me, and he’d got it for 50%…so definitely pays to hold out.

I completely agree with your statement about ancestry.com. Full time researchers and genealogists alike are given no special status or perks. We pay full price for “all access” to everything ancestry.com offers and continue to get emails to “upgrade” to “premier” status on sites like Newspapers.com and Fold3. All access really is a misnomer.

I have been an ancestry subscriber since 1998. Thanks for the advice about getting some credit. I have had a discount in the past from find my past. Why can’t Ancestry show “old timers ” some respect for Loyalty?
