Stanford seeks transcribers for crowdsourcing project

Stanford University Archives in California this month launched a crowdsourcing project to transcribe handwritten letters and documents within its holdings.

The Stanford Archives project currently features eight collections for users to transcribe:

• 1906 earthquake and fire
• Leland Stanford, Jr. letters
• Marcia Kirwan Standley (’57) letters
• Notable people (Eadweard Muybridge, Peter Coutts, Sarah Lockwood Winchester)
• Stanford faculty
• Student life
• World War I letters
• World War II letters

Documents are transcribed by the individual pages. Users can choose to transcribe only one page or several. The FAQ section provides further instruction.

    Gail, Thanks for the post.
I grew up near Stanford and worked there for 25 years and contributed to the archives. The topics are very familiar. The legal name of the University is
The Leland Stanford Junior University and goes by the name of Stanford University. It is not part of the University of California or the State University system. It is a private university and was founded in memory of Leland Stanford’s young son and only child who died at age 12. It admitted women from the very beginning.
