1921 Canada Census now free to ALL researchers on LAC’s website

O, Canada! Great news!

Library and Archives Canada announced yesterday the launch of the 1921 Canada Census on its website, which means researchers around the world now have access to the country’s most recent census.

The 1921 census includes the names of close to nine million people from across Canada, including the Yukon and the Northwest Territories.

Before yesterday, only Canadians had access, free of charge, to browse the 1921 census on Ancestry.ca. Anyone living outside the country had to subscribe to the genealogy site.

Since 2013, access to the census had been made possible through a partnership LAC had with Ancestry, whereby Ancestry assumed the cost of indexing the census and made the database available on its website. Canadians were required to purchase a subscription only if they wanted to do advanced searches.

So, wherever you live in the world, you can start your search on the 1921 census here.

Visit LAC’s Census page for free access to earlier censuses as well.
